This law, also known as Assembly Bill 1844, prohibits employers from getting username and passwords “for the purpose of accessing personal social media, to access personal social media in the presence of the employer, or to divulge any personal social media” (Susskind). While California has gotten around to making privacy a right to social media users, they are only the third state to do so (Susskind). Laws like Assembly Bill 1844 have led to the “Social Networking Online Protection Act (SNOPA) and the Password Protection Act of 2012 (PPA)” (Susskind). While the Assembly Bill 1844 are moving the argument of social media privacy in the correct direction, a lot still has to be done to guarantee the privacy rights of users.
