As a nurse, I believe in aid-in-death of a terminally ill patient; however, as a Catholic, it’s wrong to take one’s own life even when a drawn-out, painful death is imminent. If the Death with Dignity Act eventually passes in Michigan, I would be allowed to aid-in-death of the terminally-ill patient. This allows patients to make their own informed decisions while supporting them with their journey. I believe this is compatible with a nurse’s mission of mercy and care. Not all healthcare professionals support this type of decision; however, health care organizations need to respect all views. The rights-based ethical theory applies in Brittany Maynard’s case. She had the right to request aid-in-death services when she realized her illness would strip away her dignity. She wanted to spare herself and her family. Unfortunately, lack of laws preventing her wishes caused undue stress by forcing her to move to Oregon. Maynard’s physicians understood the principle of
