opossum, the starling and a host of other indigenous and introduced species will rush in to fill it” (Boyle 213). Believe it or not, this is in context with the idea of illegal immigrants coming into to the U.S and doing the jobs that the American public perceives as below them. He continues on to say “the coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in the gaps. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable” (Boyle 215). For Delaney, the coyotes symbolize the illegal immigrants. They’ve come to do the jobs that others won’t do and are filling the gaps of civilization in the U.S. There persistence makes them cunning and unstoppable while their need for a better life make them versatile. Unlike at the very beginning where he detested the existence of a coyote, here Delaney is much more understanding of the coyote’s position. Just like any working man or woman, the coyote does what it can to survive. However, Delaney is afraid of the future. He cannot anticipate the coyote’s next move so he carries on life with hesitation. The coyote’s erratic behavior leaves him second guessing himself and his views on the illegal immigrants. In conclusion, the coyote in the novel, The Tortilla Curtain , serves as an obstacle for many of the characters for the entire duration of the novel. It is set as a connection between the people from both sides of the wall. One could say that they all feared the unknown. America and her husband, Candido feared what was waiting for them on the other side of the border. Delaney and his family feared the future and what to expect after the death of their loving pets. More specifically, Delaney feared himself and his conflicting views. Boyle artistically crafted the
