Gates grew up in a very small town that he referred to as a village of 2,000 people that was surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains and was where everyone knew each other. It was an immigrant town who’s inhabitants where brought in by the Westvaco paper mill. As in any town, there were imaginary lines indicating differences of economic status; but in addition to being different communities based on economic status, there were also separate communities based on color. 3. What are some of the specific aspects of race relations in this town that Gates mentions? The white Americans and the African Americans lived in separate neighborhoods, and the African Americans were not allowed to own property. Encounters with the other race were very limited for they rarely imposed upon each other’s lives. Gates says that they had “Mr. Mail Man”, “Mr. Insurance Man”, and “Mr. Landlord Man”, but for the most part they lived in a “segregated peace.” At the paper mill, the menial jobs were occupied
