Professor Welch, The United States could have constructed the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group a bit sooner but I don’t believe that the United States could have prevented the road South Vietnam was heading down. The problems of the Republic of Vietnam laid within their multiple leaderships. Every new leader who became appointed the United States was skeptical of. Up until now I have not read of one leader whom the United States FULLY put their trust in. The South Vietnamese government was unreliable to their people and the United States favored dumping money into their corrupt governments rather than accepting responsibility to reform them. The citizens of the Republic of Vietnam grew tired of the unreliable government and they began to retaliate. The United States had their foot half in the door trying not to lose their efforts to keep Vietnam as an asset.
