o Jane Adams is one of the most progressive reformers, born in Chicago.  Her father is kind of a rich businessman in Chicago. Adams graduates  from high school and inherits her fathers passion to do good. But because  she is a woman she can’t do this. She goes to Europe and discovers in  England an early version of a settlement house, which is a house in which  middle class and upper class reformers try to get these poor citizens to  reform themselves. o Progressives to some extent were willing to turn a blind eye to the South. o Woodrow Wilson was the first southerner to hold the White House since  after the Civil War. o The other faith was that if enough people got outraged about something  then you can change things easily. Roosevelt said you need to use the bully pulpit. The gov’t needs to have a  modernized form of gov’t. he creates the Dept of Labor and Dept of Finance.

18:20 When the government turned to a paper money currency, that was a sudden  surge for development. McKinley ran on the gold standard, in 1873 they stopped using silver as the form  of currency, up until then you could take silver to the treasury and they would  purchase it from you and then turn it into a coin. For the ID section of the test there will be something like “free silver” Who controls power? Speaking for the powerless, democrats. Progress and poverty, the single tax – it has a very simple solution to the  problems that are imeding on society. He goes west and sees that land speculators are eating up the land in  California. He says that as more people move out to the west the land becomes more  valuable If you impose a tax on land that took away all the propery value added to it so  this is what they did All the speculators basically walked away because there was no point in  owning the land if you could not profit off of it. At the same time people had been congregating in cities because they  couldn’t afford land. Now with the valueless land out west people moved out  and lived there.  o Basically a utopia was created because of the single tax o THIS WAS NEVER ACTUALLY IMPOSED ***know the partisan difference between why the democrats supported tariff  decisions and why the republicans supported them*** Anti-monopoly had been a powerful force since trust started appearing. One of  the main defining elements was the special interest had gotten too much power.  The idea of a “trust” is a legal device that basically says you cannot manipulate  coorporations across state lines.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
