During his fourth term in prison, he was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize . o Took part in the Tiananmen Square protests, initiating the four man three day hunger strike when police were about to take action and prevented bloodshed • Deliberative Poll (Fishken – counter rational ignorance) o A scientific sample of ordinary citizens of China to deliberate about which infrastructure projects would be funded in the coming year – purpose to reduce conflict of interest, perception of corruption and provide a channel for citizens and interest groups to express their concerns about municipal construction projects Deliberative opinion polling aims to understand what public opinion would be if the public were well informed and had carefully discussed a particular issue – citizens are invited by modern random sampling techniques to participate, so that a large enough sampling group will provide a relatively accurate representation of public opinion • A counter to rational ignorance and elites not understanding working class – promoting intra party democracy Pros and cons include the information given to the citizens to sway them one way or another and whether or not the government will accept the consensus the people come to • One-child policy
o Part of China’s economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping in 1978 – titled a family planning policy, but also targets solving social and environmental problems o Idea that families in urban areas should have one child so that China could concentrate its resources on less people – quality over quantity, more per capita, there were some exceptions to the rule among the ruling class and its two children per household in the countryside At first it was a big deal but now the idea is supported by the country seeing it as their duty to China – nationalism – different view of human rights than the west has – collective over the individual • Politburo o A group of 24 people who oversee the CCP of China, whose power comes from the fact that the members usually hold other positions in the PRC and their control over these positions. Decisions are made by consensus rather than majority vote. II. Essay Questions : You will be asked to write two short essays. For each essay, you will have a choice of questions to choose from. (Approx. 45-60 minutes per essay.) 1. Contemporary Politics: You will be asked to write one essay based on the reading and lectures in last half of the course since the midterm.
