Hard to prove Long Island: unusually high incidence of breast cancer DDT has estrogen-like properties o Different provinces, states & countries have different rules regarding pesticide usage o Important to use it according to the label (some highly toxic) Malathion: exposure to large amount kills/interferes with very important enzyme system in our body but in small amounts, can control mosquito population o Weed killers: Roundup ( glyphosate) & Killex (2,4-D)
Very effective at killing weeds But is it harming us? o Every country has an agency that decides what is safe to go on the market & what is not In Canada, it is the Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency Term “registered”: approved for certain applications Not a blanket approval Needs a lot of information to be approved Not a haphazard process o RISK VS BENEFITS ASSESSMENT ° Nocebo: opposite of placebo o mind tricked into think it has harmful effect India: recently, children died because pesticide contaminated food o Story is not very clear, principle of the school accused of murder o Large container of Monocrotophos is stored in the school o Contaminated food, made it taste bitter, children complained form principle made them eat it anyway Monocrotophos: 1.2grams is a lethal dose Parkinson’s disease in agricultural areas o May be a connection to pesticide o Paraquat: pesticide that has a chemical similarity to a contaminant that caused a very unusual problem in 1980’s among some drug users in California. They showed up in emergency rooms virtually paralyzed (like end stages of Parkison’s) Problem: contaminant in something sold as China White Destroyed some cells in the substantia nigra part of the brain (produces dopamine; lack of dopamine causes Parkinson’s) o Rotenone: extracted from the roots of the Derris plant Also chemically similar to paraquat & China White’s contaminant
Association b/w some household pesticides & childhood leukemia o No risk associated with outdoor pesticides; indoor spraying Major concern: subtle chronic effects o Because more & more info comes out about how some of these pesticides can disrupt hormones ( endocrine disrupting chemicals) Atrazine: widely used weed killer has been shown to have an effect on tadpoles o Makes humans worry about our own health o In labs, many pesticides have shown to have an effect on male hormones o Studies have shown an effect on the uterus (endometriosis) However, difficult to prove that pesticides are the culprits o If causation is to be proven, diet, level of exercise & genetic susceptibility need to controlled; all of which are difficult to control What do the studies & lab experiments tell us?
