contact, position and how we claim or share public space. You might be surprised at how much hidden communicating is going on around you. Humans cannot help but communicate. And most of our communication is non-verbal. By listening to the non- verbal messages described in this program, you will understand more of the many layers of communication that surrounds you. 2) ANNE GALLAGHER Wouldn't it be great if you could tell what someone was thinking just by looking at them. Well, you can gain confidence if you know how to recognize the silent signals people send. This radio beacon sends a signal that does nothing but identify itself. It broadcasts that same old identify signal 24 hours a day. It would never rate a button on your car radio. But to an airplane this beacon is a critical navigational aid. Like beacons, each of us broadcasts a unique set of non verbal signals that does nothing but identify us to the world. Your postures, gestures, eye movements and voice are all part of your personal broadcast. As are your use of time and the space around you. ANNE GALLAGHER Throughout this program we'll discover the signals of non verbal communication. And learn how to height our awareness of how body language communicates. We'll take a look at the studies of kinesics, eye contact, paralanguage, haptics, proxemics, and chronemics. ANNE GALLAGHER People judge us by our signals. These include facial expressions, gestures, posture and eye behavior. The study of these is called Kinesics. Kinesics can be broken down into five categories, emblems, illustrators, affect displays, regulators, and adaptors. Pay close attention to the body language used in the follow scenes. 02:05UNKNOWN I said, I don't care where we go to dinner and he said, that's the whole problem. You don't care about anything. oh, hold on a sec. I'll be off in a second. I mean seriously all I've done for him and he has the audacity to suggest that I don't -- 02:25UNKNOWN Shh. UNKNOWN I've got to go. I'll call you later. 02:30UNKNOWN Hey dad, if I pick up mom from the train station is it all right if I borrow the car. All right, thanks. Bye. ANNE GALLAGHER In each of these conversations, we saw two participants. One person used words and the other used emblems. Emblems are non verbal behaviors that are direct replacements for words. The meanings of -- 02:55UNKNOWN Shh. ANNE GALLAGHER -- no this is not acceptable, be quiet. And sounds great, good bye are crystal clear without using any words at all. ANNE GALLAGHER An illustrator is the second time of non verbal message. Illustrators are small movements and postures used to emphasize or punctuate ideas. They illustrate verbal messages. A person says, boy was I stupid. And illustrates that with the gesture like this. A sort of mock hitting himself in the head. Saying, let's go is often illustrated by pointing forward. If we are uncertain about something or have conflicting feelings, this gesture with our hand illustrates those emotions. Sometimes we draw pictures in the air as illustrators.
