o Secondary: when a single culture evolves into multiple, each with their own norms Code of the Streets A set of informal rules that governed interpersonal behavior in predominantly black inner-city communities o Revolve around maintenance of respect as a value “Decent” families- focused on raising children with dominant middle-class values o Staying clear of trouble, church attendance, respect of authority “Street” families- more dysfunctional, children are raised with expectation of violence o Considered a nuisance by “decent” neighbors What happens when they meet? “Decents” are self-aware of their environment; they have to project a particular image o They must balance home values with neighborhood values
