Kotter’s method is applied to NI for advanced practice nurses by applying eight steps that are directed more at the nursing profession and patient care. According to Brock, White, Lipira, McCotter, Shannon, & Gallagher (2017), those eight steps are: Increase urgency Build guiding teams Get the vision right Communication for buy-in Enable action Create short-term wins Don’t let up Make it stick Phases 1-3 create the climate for change, phases 4-6 engage and enable the organization, and phases 7-8 implement and sustain the change. Each phase should be carried out and applied to nursing so that nurses are aware of the change and that the change is to be permanent and to be followed. Advanced
practice nurses, as well as nurses that provide direct patient care, need to be educated on the importance of NI and that there is a reason that education needs to be sought and maintained. The use of EHRs allows for more patient engagement, allows for better patient based decisions, leads to a more positive patient approach, and allows patients to be active in their own care as well as allowing patients access to their own medical records in real time (Byers, 2015).
