arranged a defense agreement between Sardinia and France. The next year Austria declared war on Sardinia. But French and Italian soldiers pushed the Austrians almost as far east as Venice, Sardinia gained the nearby region of Lombardy. Then in 1869, people from Modena, Parma, and Tuscany showed their respect for Sardinia’s accomplishments. They united with Sardinia and turned against Austria. Count Camillo di Cavour: Good day! I have been called the “Brain” of Italian unification. I planned for Italy to become united into one country with my King, Victor Emmanuel II as the King of Italy. With the help of the French, I defeated the Austrians in a war in 1859. THe Austrians gave up Lombardy. While Garibaldi was conquering the Two Sicilies, I attacked the Papal States. If you look at the map you will see that by taking the Papal States, we were able to unite northern and southern Italy into one nation. However, it was not until 1870 that Rome became part of our country. “The Sword”

Giuseppe Garibaldi was a revolutionary most of his life. When he was 26, he joined the secret society, Young Italy. Garibaldi was a soldier in the battle for freedom. HIs attempts to lead Italy to independence won him the nickname of “The Sword.” Giuseppe Garibaldi: I was known as “The Sword” of Italian unification. In 1860, my army called the RED SHIRTS, conquered Sicily. I then crossed the mainland and we captured the city of Naples. I gave all this land to King Victor Emmanuel II so he could be King of a united Italy. Mazzini, Count Cavour, and Giuseppe Garibaldi all played a significant role in the triumph of Italian unification. Fill out the chart, explaining the steps each man took towards uniting Italy. -Mazzini organized a new political society called “Young Italy”. -Young Italy was a secret society formed to promote Italian unification. -He wanted to unite Italy as one country. -Mazzini believed that a popular uprising would create a unified Italy, and would touch off a European-wide revolutionary movement.
