wielded by religious leaders and institutions would be diminished and that the people would no longer engage in religious practices or conduct their life according to religious rules. The Secularisation Thesis was accepted by many academics and thinkers since the 19 th Century as much of Europe became Secular; the strongest evidence for Secularisation occurs within the UK. The 1851 Census found that approximately 40% of the population attended Church however by 2005 the figure had dramatically reduced to 6.3% (English Church Census.1855). There has been a steady decline in church marriages, baptisms and communions whereas divorce rate has increased as has the number of children living with single parents or with parents unmarried; providing strong evidence that religions moral code exerted by the church lacks influence today. Secularisation has not occurred globally at the same rate, and in some places it has been arguably rejected outright. For example, the biggest challenge to the Secularisation Theory is the United States, which is on par with some third world countries for levels of religiosity. America is one of the most advanced countries in the world with high degrees of industrialisation, therefore should have surrendered its belief in the supernatural and become Secular. There have been a number of reasons for this inconsistency such as America’s high level of immigration, from countries with no Industrial background, also that the immigrants retain their spiritual belief as a way of holding on to their heritage. Another argument provided by Bruce states that the American religion has adapted to meet the demands of society and instead of concentrating on the beliefs and spiritualisation of religion has turned to a modern day therapy opportunity; helping it to remain current within a modern secular world; its purpose changing dramatically from soul salvation to seeking personal improvement. Bruce’s argument although widely accepted is criticised for ignoring the growth of the New Christian Right movement, who are rigid in their belief and refuse to compromise in said beliefs; this is direct contradiction to Bruce’s arguments of Churches and religious groups dumbing down to fit the masses (Bruce et al.2010). Another exception to the Secularisation Theory is the Muslim countries which are becoming Industrialised and therefore seem to be going through a process of modernisation, however instead of becoming secular as seen within Europe they are retaining their religiosity. An excellent example of this would be the Muslim countries within the Gulf which have become industrialised, but have rules regarding the theory 2

evolution, and totally refute its claim; meaning that the countries are not truly modernising but instead increasing pragmatism only. (Crabtree.V.2008).
