completely clueless when given a task.” • “At Milbank, transactional work is staffed very lean, so you get a lot of experience early on. However, the downside is that in some finance groups, associates are still doing very junior work while they take on mid-level work as they reach third year.” • “I am a senior associate and so do spend most of my time on substantive work at an appropriate level. We often have staffing issues without as much junior support as we might like, and so I still end up doing tasks that would be better done by junior lawyers, but this is yet another function of working in a small office. We get a lot of responsibility and work on great deals.” • “As a first-year I’ve been exposed to incredible award- winning deals from the start. I’ve been able to draft agreements, contact directly with clients and opposing counsel, and feel growth in my skills and experience day after day. Most of the work I performed at the start was more administrative in nature, but now I spend most of my day drafting, researching, analyzing, answering legal questions for clients, helping however I can. The work is challenging, engaging, and thought-provoking. I feel as though I have my pulse on the center of the financial world, and the stories on our deals in the WSJ confirm that.” Training & Mentoring • “Associates are amazing about taking extra time to train juniors. People here take pride in Milbank’s reputation for excellent work and are invested in ensuring that juniors con- tinue that reputation.” • “[email protected] is amazing. But that’s not all—the liti- gation department has a new advocacy development program that has really high quality training and is stepped through the years, so there is always something going on of a good quality.” • “There are not a lot of formal training options for junior attorneys, which I think is an area that could use a lot of improvement. People in my group are very willing to train up younger associates, however.” • “The [email protected] program is just extraordinary. Part- ners could generally invest a bit more time to mentor and sponsor associates in everyday life.”

355 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2018 Edition MILBANK, TWEED, HADLEY & McCLOY LLP Career Outlook • “Partnership is very unlikely, but counsel is generally offered to high-performing senior associates. Exit opportunities appear to be plentiful—to clients, competitors, etc.” • “I feel confident that when I am ready to make a move, I won’t have trouble doing so, at least in comparison to others working at top firms. Milbank’s partnership track seems quite limited, but I personally don’t have an interest in becoming partner. Senior associates can transition into of counsel and/ or special counsel roles.” • “Partnership is doubtful—though I don’t know many asso- ciates that are particularly interested either. When people leave, they tend to get interesting in house jobs.” • “I don’t think partnership is realistic for ’home-grown’ asso- ciates, just based on looking at who makes partner.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
