These consultants were able to crack these weak passwords and get main access to affected systems and had full freedom to look into all files and folders just like an administrator. Later on, these consultants identified multiple systems, where, either weak or default administrator passwords were being used for their Microsoft SQL and Apache Tomcat servers. In a week’s time targets internal network had been fully accessed to solve further problems. Outdated or missing patches: A penetration test or a Pen test is usually performed on systems to look for security weaknesses and gives access to data. A penetration test on Target’s system suggested that some critical security patches were missing and that some systems were using outdated software like IBM Web Sphere, PHP etc. These outdated web servers gave access to critical infrastructure and opened up data from affected systems without asking for any authentication. Target made its internal network much sturdier and now asked for consultants to perform external penetration tests to check to what level a possible attacker can hack their system. This test had proved that Target was strong and could quickly detect and catch hold of external attackers. Moreover, interactive access, by a potential hacker, to the operating system of the tested systems was not possible.

TARGET DATA BREACH 6 Legal compliance: One interesting fact about the Target data breach lawsuits was that, all of them were filed prematurely, i.e, before Target had mentioned what kind of breach had occurred, when it had occurred and the kind of measures the company has taken to solve these issues. These lawsuits contained various reasons like invasion of privacy, negligence, statutory violations, breach of implied and express contracts etc. Of all these causes two primary reasons were: a)Target did not take preventive measures for its data protection and b) customers who were affected were not notified soon enough. Target did in fact act pretty soon given the situation. Before notifying an individual about the breach and his personal information being accessed, the company has to ensure it follows some rules: a) It is important to know whose information has been breached b) to what extent the company can reveal to consumer about the breach and c) it has to ensure that this notification to the concerned person is in compliance with legal requirements of the company. Such law enforcement hold could have been in practice during the breach investigation. And that could have caused the delay. Target managed to do this task in a span of few days while it usually takes weeks for the same. As long as 30- 45 days may be taken by the company before it initiates the notification process just to ensure the span of the breach in the company. Prior or premature notification to the affected individual may hinder with the process of identification and investigation of the hackers.
