At that time period, it was believed that drinking pure wine would cause you to become violent and disruptive. In turn, at the end of the first millennium, the distillation of alcoholic beverages was on the rise. When alcohol is distilled, the alcohol content rises. Doctors believed that distilled alcohol had many health benefits, so they would give to patients to hopefully cure them of their diseases. In the second half of the book, Standage acknowledges coffee, tea, and cola and how they affected society at the time and, more importantly, now. As opposed to Beer, wine, and spirits (alcoholic drinks that were known for making one intoxicated and enter a different state of mind) coffee was the first popular drink to promote clear thinking. It had a different connotation. While alcohol was connected to slowing down and becoming relaxed, coffee was more connected to waking you up, giving you energy, and clearing your mind. Though coffee gained it’s popularity in the Middle East, it most likely originated in North Africa. It was very popular among Muslims due to the fact that they could not drink alcohol. In fact, that some Muslim scholars said that it was intoxicating, therfor no better than alcohol. In the 1600’s in europe, men would go to coffee houses and discuss intellectual matters. Tea was invented in China as far back as 6th century B.C.E. Tea (dried Camellia Sinensis leaves infused into hot water) were believed to have healing powers, used as currency, and there were even tea drinking ceremonies. Although tea is from China, it quickly became Britain’s most popular beverage (some would call it their national

drink). Lastly, in the late 1800’s, John Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, invented the first version of Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola is the first soft drink and quickly became the U.S.A.’s national beverage.Throughout the past century, Coke has spread all over the world and has become one of the most popular drinks on the earth.
