Outreach project (10 points extra credit) The goal of this assignment is to educate members of the public about microbiology by creating 10 slides OR a 3 page brochure. You may select a subset or expansion of any of the topics listed on Canvas. If there is a topic or a set of materials that is not included on the list that you are interested in, please speak with the professor to obtain special permission to pursue your ideas. Additional templates, examples, and instructions for this activity can be found on Canvas. Review assignments (20 points) Four worksheets will be handed out in class (and posted on canvas if you would rather print your own) and must be filled out and brought to class on the date specified in the syllabus- they will be used as part of the lecture that day. Late assignments will receive a 20% penalty. Participation (25 points) Historically, students who do well in this course are the students who regularly attend class and engage actively with the material. Therefore, attendance will be monitored using Connect and students will receive up to 25 points for questions answered during class (one point per class period). In order to receive all the participation points, students must be present and answer questions in at least 25 of the 38 lecture class periods. Students who must miss more than 13 days class for interviews, sickness, work conflicts, or other reasons will forfeit participation points. Connect is required for class and students must have an active subscription and a device capable of sending data through Connect to receive these points. This may be any internet-connectable device such as: laptop, smart phone, or tablet. In the event that Internet connectivity is disrupted during class, the professor will account for attendance another way. The professor will use lecture capture and make lectures available online as long as there are no technical difficulties that may prevent this. Lectures will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:50 am – 9:40 am in Room 125 Ag Hall. Grading Scale (610 points total) These are the minimum point totals required to guarantee the grade. A= >92 % 561.2 points AB= 88-91.99% 536.8 points B= 80-87.99% 488 points BC= 78-79.99% 475.8 points C= 70-77.99% 427 points D= 60-69.99% 366 points F= <60% Academic integrity Most people try to be honest. However some students may (knowingly or unknowingly) commit academic misconduct. Examples of academic misconduct include: cheating on an examination (copying from another student’s paper, referring to materials on the exam other than those explicitly permitted, and continuing to work on an exam after the time has expired) or lying about reasons that you missed an exam. Academic dishonesty is a serious violation: it undermines the bonds of trust and honesty between members of our academic community, degrades the value of your degree and defrauds those who may eventually depend upon your knowledge and integrity. Exams must be completed as an individual effort. Students who cheat on exams may be referred to the UW Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards. However, outreach project, Review assignments, and quizzes may be completed with your peers and any resources you find helpful without penalty.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
