Those persons were Albert and I, secret, busy and multiform in other dimensions of time.”(384) Here Borges mentality that our actions are insignificant compared to the rest of the world comes into play. Directly after Yu Tsun is consumed with the sensation of feeling multiple dimensions of time around him, he makes the decision to take the life of Albert. Yu Tsun’s beliefs are now parallel with Borges theme of insignificance. Yu Tsun must complete the mission he set out for, to kill Albert, a man he clearly respected, but he is comforted by the idea of infinite alternate endings to his encounter. He makes this final decision because in his eyes this choice could be viewed as inconsequential in comparison to the vast number of varying conclusions. Borges uses of literary devices, such as imagery and symbolism, to describe Yu Tsun’s reunion with his own family heritage are what give this short story such depth. Within this story Borges reveals his aversion towards the idea of war. Also, through Yu
Puckett 3Tsun experience, Borges divulges the theme of this story, insignificance of our actions compared to the rest of the world.
