Employee satisfaction is the term used to describe a situation when the employees are satisfied and contented with his or her job and the office environment. Employee Satisfaction is of utmost importance in any organization be it small or large. It is not only important for the employee but for the organization also for which the employee works for. 5.1 Definitions of Employee Satisfaction: Different authors give various definitions of employee job satisfaction. Some of them are taken from the book of D. M. Pestonjee “Motivation and Job Satisfaction” which are given below: “Employee Job Satisfaction is defined as a pleasurable, emotional, state resulting from appraisal of one’s job. It is an effective reaction to one’s job.” –by Weiss “Employee Job Satisfaction is general attitude, which is the result of many specific attitudes in three areas namely: Specific Job Factors Individual Characteristics Group Relationship outside the Job” –by Blum and Naylor “Employee Satisfaction is defined, as it is a result of various attitudes the person holds towards the job, towards the related factors and towards the life in general.” –by Glimmer Employee Job Satisfaction is defined as any contribution, psychological, physical, and environmental circumstances that cause a person truthfully say, “I am satisfied with my job.” “Employee Job Satisfaction is defined, as employee’s judgment of how well his job on a whole is satisfying his various needs.” 11

–by Mr. Smith “Employee Job Satisfaction is defined as a pleasurable or positive state of mind resulting from appraisal of one’s job or job experiences” –by Locke 5.2 Importance of Employee Satisfaction: Importance from Organization’s point of view: Enhances employee retention and the organization does not need to train the employees repeatedly Overall productivity is increased and expedites the process of achieving company goals Employees satisfaction leads to customer satisfaction as a satisfied employee deals with a customer in a better way Money spent of recruitment and training of new candidates can be saved extensively High efficiency can be achieved in day to day operations Importance from Employee’s point of view: When the employee receives satisfactory services from the organization initially, he hopes to receive the same in the longer run Employees start taking interest in their work rather than worrying about other issues Employees start feeling a sense of responsibility towards the organization They strive to produce better results in order receive appreciation from the organization They start taking ownership of their own work 5.3 Factors influencing Employee Satisfaction: 12

Herberg, Mauser, Peterson and Capwell in 1957 reviewed more than 150 studies and listed various factors of employee satisfaction. These are briefly defined one by one as follows: 1. Intrinsic aspect of job: It includes all of the many aspects of the work, which would tend to be constant for the work regardless of where the work was performed.
