P. 42 #1-5 1 Subculture is the unique characteristics of a group. 4. Functionalist 5. Globalization and the quickening rate of diffusion have brought about cultural leveling. 6. Subculture is the unique characteristics of a group. Counterculture is represented by a group who rejects the major values, norms, and practices of the larger society and replaces them with a new set of cultural patterns. Subculture and counterculture are alike in the sense that they both are cultural practices. Counterculture just goes against the average, typical culture. 7. From the functionalist perspective, ethnocentrism is good and helps build group unity. In contrast, the conflict perspective argues that belief in then superiority of a group or society often results in one group or society seeing others as inferior. This tends to encourage dis- crimination against those seen as inferior. P. 43 #1-2 1 Immigrant groups influenced American culture in my community from the way we dress, to the foods we eat. As of recently, African culture has started to gain more appreciation. In school, we have ASA which is African Student Association. ASA groups in all schools, dance, model, and perform all over the county. These groups are not even all African, there's Americans in it too. Also, a common hairstyle of African woman is braids. In my commu- nity, many young African American females wear braids as a protective hairstyle. Also, natu- ral hair is being embraced and encouraged. Basically, African culture has joined American culture in my community. 8. The cultural influence of Hispanic immigrants is visible in many areas. For example, Mexi- can foods such as tortillas and salsa have become common across the United States. The growth in popularity of Spanish language television, such as Telemundo, has also changed the way large corporations such as General Motors and Ford advertise. Spanish language ads for new automobiles have been made specifically to reach the more than 2.8 million viewers in the United States.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
