9: What needs to be done to access the natural gas that's trapped in shale? Explain. it needs to be broken down, or exposed to high heat or pressure. 10: Water is used during the hydraulic fracturing process. How is the water used? What happens to the water afterwards? Water acts as the carrying fluid in the hydraulic fracturing process. 11: Can you predict the shape of a shale layer by looking at a small portion of it? no 12: Explain your answer. No because shale can be thin on some sides and thick on the others. 13: What factors affect the amount of methane you can get from each well? The thickness of the shale, how fractured it was, and how long the well is 14: The graph shows the wells having a decreasing output over time. What causes the output to decline over time? There is less natural gas left in the well over time. 15: How does the combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing allow drillers to extract the natural gas from shale? they dont have to drill as many vertical wells for the same amount of shale. Since shale is impermeable, hydraulic fracturing is necessary.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
