should miss more than 40% of class meetings for any reason , you cannot pass the course. In case of all absences, you should communicate with myself or your recitation instructor as soon as possible. Ask a classmate for notes from missed classes, and then meet with an instructor to discuss any questions if necessary. Tardiness and other types of disruptive behavior will have a negative impact upon your class participation grade. Critical reflections: Eight critical reflection papers, each 1-2 pages in length, are due over the course of the semester. Each of these should summarize key points gleaned from one set assigned readings (and the lecture to the extent possible), provide observations on the potential significance of that point for social and cultural analysis, and pose questions you have regarding them. You are expected to post each critical reflection to your recitation section’s forum on NYU Classes, in advance of the recitation session during which the reading will be discussed. Additional information on this assignment will be provided in class. Critical reflections will be graded primarily for completion; each reflection is worth 3 points. Short analytical essays: You will complete two 4-5 page analytical essays that consider one of the political, cultural, or social texts assigned in class, applying the major concepts presented in the course towards a critical analysis of it. In this class, we are fortunate to have help from the Undergraduate Writing Tutors Program. Writing tutors will work primarily in one-on-one meetings or “conferences” that aim to encourage and challenge you to strengthen your writing and clarify your ideas. Writing tutors are not Teaching Assistants and they will not assess papers, but you are required to participate in the program for both analytical essays , in each case submitting a draft of your paper on time for written feedback and attending a scheduled, 30-minute long, one-on-one conference the week after. Writing Tutors should receive a complete drafts from you, not outlines or rough notes. Late submission of drafts to tutors and missed conferences are reported to the Professor, and will lower a student’s final grade. More information on the essays will be provided in class. Each paper is work 25% of your final grade . Group keywords assignments: In small groups, you will compose critical summaries (approximately 4-5 pages) of keywords (e.g. “empire,” “gender”) in social and cultural analysis, which you will post to NYU Classes and present to your classmates during recitation. Additional information will be provided in class.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
