ought to treat a service user as a whole and obey their rights to self-determination (Clark, 2006). In contradiction of Kant’s theory, utilitarianism would entail reflecting on the effecting of transferring the user from their home into safe and adapted environments – the implication is that a care home seems like an easy option for disabled people to access care. This thinking could result in disagreement since the worker is going against the service user’s desires and wishes. Utilitarianism focuses on the ideal outcome for the society as opposed to an individual. In light of this, by transferring users from their homes to care facilitates, the society gains maximum happiness even though it ignores the individual’s viewpoints ( Midgley & Conley, 2010). This is a major flaw in the model since a large number of service users could possibly not access proper and adequate care in a way that is acceptable to them because the focus is on communal benefit. This is particularly true for disabled persons who speak English as a second language or who

VALUES AND ETHICS 7 have strict religious or personal convictions. By removing them out of their homes, the system could in a way, be discriminating or jeopardizing their wellbeing. Brody & Nair (2013) note that moral professional practice does not ascribe to just grand ethical principles or technical competences; it also exists intrinsically in the practitioner’s moral character. In fact, social work as a value-laden profession, which is inseparable from virtue ethics since the efficient dispensation of work ethics and values rely not only on skillful or on even duty-minded workers, but they ought to be the carriers of good characters. Denying the value- neutrality of social workers in liberal individualistic nations, Barsky (2019) focuses his aim on the moral personality of social workers and aspects that comprise an upright professional. In his view, social workers need to comply with the protocols and guidelines documented in different codes on human rights concerning personal connections ( Barsky, 2019) . What is more, the workers must be capable of meeting context-sensitive moral canons where social work operates. For Brody & Nair (2013) , social workers are essentially conveyors of context-sensitive moral ideals and bearers of certain moral characters. This thinking is applicable in accommodation, which is a major challenge for most service users. Confining young people to young disability facilities, units meant for those with learning disabilities, can be a source conflict. Though it appears to help them interact and find help, there is possibility of clashes as a person is unable to decide whether they want to stay away from their family and friends. If put in a purpose built facility, they are classified as being accommodated by local authorities and as such, do not get to choose other locations ( Barsky, 2019; Brody & Nair, 2013). This is a sensitive issue and a source of ethical dilemma for social workers who are mandated to look into the person’s needs while balancing the need to get them help and respecting their wishes, especially if the user is incapable of making the decision.
