NFC operates in the 13.56 MHz frequency and has a maximum transmission speed of 424 Kbps. Special chips called NFC chips are used to send, receive, and store data. Devices using NFC operate in one of three modes: o Read/writer mode is used to read information stored on an NFC chip. o Peer-to-Peer mode enabled two devices to communicate and exchange information. o Card Emulation mode emulates the functionality of a smart card in order to perform contactless payment or ticketing (this mode is typically used by smartphones). In order to communicate, devices must be within 2 inches of each other. Data transmissions can be secured by using encryption algorithms. NFC has seen widespread use in the following areas: o Contactless payment (e.g., using a smartphone as a payment method) o Identification (e.g., passports that contain an NFC chip) o Video gaming Even though NFC has slower transmission speeds than Bluetooth, it consumes much less power and sets up connections much faster. Internet Services 0:00-0:32 In this lesson, we're going to look at the various Internet technologies that can be used to connect a home or a small office network to the internet. Now before we start I want to emphasize that we're only going to be looking at the Internet connections that are used in home or home office or in a small office environment. Now larger businesses and corporations use enterprise level Internet services that cost thousands of dollars per month. The Internet connection types we're going to be looking at use a similar technology but are implemented on a much smaller scale. Dial-up 0:33-1:14 So the first Internet connection method we're going to look at here is dial-up, which uses the public switched telephone network or PSTN. Now this type of Internet connection requires the computer to have a modem installed. The modem converts digital signals into analog signals that can travel along the public switched telephone network. Now with dial-up, the computer connects to a telephone line that is then used to dial into the Internet service provider. Now dial-up Internet is very slow and today it's very rarely used to connect to the internet. And because of this we're not going to go into very much detail about it. The main thing that you need to know is that dial-up Internet uses a modem to connect to the public switched telephone network. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) 1:15-3:59 The next Internet connection type, and one that's used quite a bit more than a dial-up connection is called the digital subscriber line or DSL. Now DSL, like a modem, does use the public switched telephone network but it does so in a very different way. With dial-up the Internet connection uses the entire bandwidth of the telephone line and that means that voice calls cannot occur while the computer is using the internet, and vice versa, but with DSL a special technique called multiplexing is used to allow for two simultaneous signals on the same line.
