This double consciousness in African Americans was created by conformity. Con- formity is when an individual’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors are influenced by what other people believe is what they should be. A perfect example of this is early on in the protagonist’s story. Before he fights, he is forced to watch a white woman dance seduct- ively in front of the crowd. Naturally, as a man he desires to watch the woman’s beauty, but society has forced the belief upon him that no African American should ever lay eyes

In fear for his life he would not look up but the crowd of angry men shouted mix ideas to him, some shouted for him to look up yet others de- manded he not even think about it.
