T”). In its ruling, the court credited many of the admissions extracted by the Winston team on cross-examination from plaintiffs’ own experts. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: Winston & Strawn’s recruiting efforts include the standard top schools and high grades criteria, but the firm is really focused on a candidate’s past experience, looking at anything from extracurricular activities in college to clerkships and work at another firm. When it comes down to it, a personality fit is the ultimate golden ticket. Hiring Process • “Law school is of course important and grades matter everywhere, but above all I think Winston looks for people with engaging personalities who will work hard and effectively in a high pressure.” • “I believe the firm looks for highly qualified candidates who attended reputable law schools, achieved good grades, and were active in extracurricular activities—whether it be journals or pro bono volunteer work. The firm certainly is active in looking to hire clerks as well.” • “The firm has changed their hiring process from law schools. Grades have become more important and school definitely matters. Law Review, clerkships, prior work experience, and diversity all play a role.” • “We actively try to recruit self-motivated candidates from a variety of backgrounds.” Interview Questions • “They asked about things on my resume, why I was interested in Winston, and what type of law I was interested in practicing. The call-back interviews were very much tailored to a particular practice area, and my interviews with attorneys in that practice were focused on that area.” • “They’re geared toward seeing how you handle yourself and to give you an opportunity to tell stories.” • “One question that seems to be increasingly popular is whether an applicant has ‘grit.’ Does the applicant have experience in overcoming obstacles? How does the applicant deal with things that don’t go his/her way?” • “Generally, the interviewing attorneys just try to get to know you to see if you fit the culture.” Lateral & Clerk Integration • “We had clerkship lunches with all of the clerks in the firm to discuss integration. I have received many pleasing work opportunities from my relationships with other former clerks.” • “Post-clerkship hires can go through the new associate orientation, which helps you meet people who have already bonded during the summer associate program.” • “I am fully integrated. The firm was friendly and welcoming.”
