edited by Anthony Giddens, Mitchell Duneier, Richard Appelbaum, and Deborah Carr. It is available at the campus bookstore and as an e-book. In addition, beginning early in the course, I will supplement the textbook with readings posted to BlackBoard. (I will announce when readings are available.) I will also supplement the course readings with occasional, topical required readings, which I will also post to BlackBoard with several days notice prior to discussing them. Clickers Participation in this course is built around TurningPoint’s interactive platform. Accordingly, to participate, I require you to have a TurningPoint license, which tethers your participation and devices to your individual student account and integrates with BlackBoard. In order to receive participation credit, you must bring a device capable of using either a web browser or the TurningPoint app. Students using the app will find extensive support documentation on the office of information technology’s webpage , including specific directions for how to obtain and register your clicker via blackboard to attach it to the course (in the linked directions, you may skip step 5, since we are not using physical clickers in the course). Students must register their clicker to our

Revision 2—19.08.27 course on Blackboard. Registration links the data in the device to the students’ account on Blackboard. A license and registration are both necessary to receive credit for in-class participation. If students experience problems with clickers, both Turning Technologies and Stony Brook’s Academic Technology Services provide excellent technical support. The TLT help desk is located on the First Floor of Melville Library (with two locations in the main Library SINC Site in S-1460 and the Teaching and Learning Lab in S-1430), and can be reached at (631)632-9602 or [email protected] or [email protected] Turning Technologies’ help line is at (877)726-4602 or [email protected] Most (though not all) of the in-class activities and quizzes will require the use of the app. Students are responsible for being prepared to respond beginning in our session on Wednesday, September 4 th . Students may only use the account registered to them. Likewise, students may not allow anyone else to use their account. Students are required to provide their audience response identification information to any member of the teaching team upon request. Misuse of audience response devices constitutes academic dishonesty. Any students suspected of clicker-related academic dishonesty will be referred to the Office of Academic Integrity via an official report. The typical penalty for clicker misuse is an “F” grade in the course following the successful completion of the “Q” course in the subsequent semester. Course Resources BlackBoard I will frequently use BlackBoard to provide resources and readings, as well as important announcements. Please check it and make sure your email address is properly configured. You are responsible for being aware of what I post to Blackboard!

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
