Integumentary System MSH-increases in pregnancy; contributes to darkening of areola, perineal area, and Linea Nigra, which is a dark line down the abd, can have a hair growth along that line Chloasma/molasma-mask of pregnancy; darker complected women may develop a darker area similar to a raccoon as well as forehead. May notice it more if she’s been out in the sun o Chloasma--A skin discoloration common during pregnancy, also known as the "mask of pregnancy" or melasma, in which blotches of pale brown skin appear on the face. It is usually caused by hormonal changes. The blotches may appear in the forehead, cheeks, and nose, and may merge into one dark mask. It usually fades gradually after pregnancy, but it may become permanent or recur with subsequent pregnancies. Some women may also find that the line running from the top to the bottom of their abdomen darkens. This is called the linea nigra. Striae—stretch marks; we think this is a hereditary trait; the tightness of the skin; products do not prevent stretch marks it may help; they do not go away they fade; they can happen anywhere where skin can stretch Spider Nevi-can happen on belly or extremities Hair Growth-pregnancy affect the hair shaft; some women will have increased or decreased hair growth; women sometimes lose hair after delivery Skeletal System Increased acidic saliva-b/c of stomach acids, it can be acidic Relaxin-hormone that helps to relax the pelvic joints so that when delivery comes the joints can stretch. Affects the whole body and make the women feel clumsy. increased curvature of the lumbar spine waddle, lower back ache Metabolism Metabolism is increased overall: contributes to lightheadedness when carbs are used up Nutritional requirements and maternal weight in pregnancy=4 TQ Pattern of weight gain: 25-30 lbs. recommended; depends on age and pre-pregnancy weight; if she’s a teenager, her body will need to gain weight to compensate for growth and development of maturity (normally she would gain a few pounds anyway even if she wasn’t pregnant); in 1 st trimester 3 ½-5 lbs, not overly concerned if no weight is gained; in 2 nd gain 1 lb/week 25-35 lbs by time pregnancy is over Water metabolism-water needs are increased in pregnancy b/c of increased plasma volume Factors influencing nutrition=3 TQ Nutrient metabolism-body will store protein during the first ½ to be used as the baby grows during the second half; increased carbs are needed; she should carry a snack with her containing a carb and
