ANALYSIS OF A NURSE LEADER4improvising the chart. Her ability to coach effectively and with patience is also a beneficial leadership skill. Michele is extremely efficient with monitoring productivity. Each month she directs a mandatory staff meeting where productivity is one of the key points of discussion. Currently, productivity is measured by time, for example the length of stay for the varying acuities of patients and the time it takes from physician discharge to ED discharge. Michele is effective at monitoring and promoting productivity as she compares length of stay and discharge times to previous months or years that have had exceedingly exemplary numbers to months that are not as productive. Michele coaches the staff on what is causing delays in time and how to avoid or better manage those delays to improve productivity. Communication of the Nurse LeaderMichele has stated more than once that she feels the best part of her position is working with her staff, while the worst part is being stuck in the middle of management commands and regulations because it creates the opportunity for conflict between her and the nursing staff (M. Gray, personal communication, October 6, 2017). In Michele’s daily routine downward communication is used often as she must direct charge and staff nurses to maintain productivity and ensure competent, effective patient care. The most frequent communication skill displayed inMichele’s downward communication is voicing expectations. Specific, measurable goals are set and explained by Michele that all staff are obligated to attain. The second most used direction of communication for Michele is lateral communication with the two other department leaders she works beside. Michele discusses problems and ideas with the other department leaders so they may find solutions and come to agreement on various matters while confirming that all department leaders have the same awareness of the ED issues and goals.
