The matai (high chief) sole responsibility is towards its family, he must plan for them, must find them food and clothing, settle their disputes, arrange their marriages if necessary. Therefore, anyone who tied to this matai (high chief) through blood, marriage, name and land, they are all considered family. As Samoans marry others with other matai (high chief) family names, and their descendants continue to marry others as well, your one village matai (high chief) family has now become 10x’s the size. My Culture my family alone, I serve both my mother and father’s side of the family, which includes their parents’ families, their grandparent’s families and so forth. Now my family of two parents, 6 siblings and 8 nieces and nephews has now become a family of 50+. To someone that is not use to this, it could easily overwhelmed them. Not for me, I am now 36 and I only know about ½ of my relatives, and very much looking forward to meeting the rest. Why care about having a big family? Wouldn’t it be so much simpler to deal with a smaller family? 4
