EDU 367 JOURNALVideo“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Purpose of Education, 2016). Critical thinking is very important for teachers to teach in their classroom and sometimes you do not even realize that a student is learning how to critically think. As educators we can teach children how to ask questions and answer these questions in any topic we are teaching. This prepares the students for questions they may have about life in the future or that they have at the moment. “Intelligence plus character- that is the goal oftrue education” (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The Purpose of Education, 2016). I really like this quote and would like to have it hung up in my classroom someday because I believe this is so true. Teachers are there to educate students about different topics but also how to be a good person and be someonewho can make a difference in the world and stand up for what is right. A person can be very smart, but without a good character they will not be able to change people’s hearts and help them in the way they want to. A teacher needs to be a good example for students in how to treat others and respect who they are by allowing diversity in the classroom and forming relationships with the students. “Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love” (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The Purpose of Education, 2016).I agree completely with this quote and have experienced this myself. This past week I went on the March for Life and was able to see the love and respect everyone has. We canchange people hearts and educate them by notusing violence but showing people love instead. This can be used in the classroom as well. A student will learn better and will be more willing to learn when they are shown love and respect in the classroom.10

A teacher should be able to create an environment that is open to all students and allows for them to bring their culture into the classroom. Some students may feel very different from others and it is our duty to helpthem feel more comfortable in the classroom. A way to do this is allowing the students to help decorate the classroom and make it their own by working together and adding things they like. “Educators have a moral and ethical responsibility to help all… reach their potential . . . No [one] should sit on the margins, feeling either physically or socially isolated from the rewards of learning and educational challenge” -Donna Ford (Taylor, slide 6).
