Time Period Person Contribution Charles Darwin Greatly influencing the Functionalist Group and the Evolutionary Biopsychosocial Approach, Charles Darwin applied his ideas of natural selection to the mind. The Theory of Evolution argues that all living species, including humans, arrived at their current biological form through inheritable changes that occurred throughout time. Through natural selection , traits that allow organisms to flourish in an often fluctuate environment genetically advance. Thus, Darwin offers a glimpse as to why the human body functions as it does in the present, feeding psychological curiosity. Part II- Word Bank 1. Psychology a. The science of behavior and the mental processes behind it. Mental processes are subjective experiences that can be inferred via behavior, the observable actions of individuals. i. While on a class field trip to the zoo, Martha ponders the psychology of apes. Peering through a glass enclosure, she wonders what goes through an ape’s head when it picks a fights with its mate. 2. Structuralism a. Created by Edward Titchener, structuralism is a group of psychology that examines spoken thoughts in order to further understand the psyche. Through introspection, structuralists can analyze the connections between thoughts, ideals, and feelings. i. “I remember saving my sister from drowning when I was a little kid”

exclaims a volunteer. As Edward Titchener inspects the memories of a test subject, he uses structuralist ideals to gather that people tend to dwell on memories that solidify their beliefs. In this case, Titchener’s subject must have a selfless persona that strives to help others. 3. Functionalism a. Founded by William James in the early twentieth century, the functionalist group draws inspiration from evolutionary discoveries. Due to natural selection, functionalists theorize that the human mind is adaptive to the environment it experiences, our minds taking shape throughout time and gaining vital traits. i. Pondering the origin of her sense of smell, Lizzie researches the roots of humanity’s traits. In doing so, she confronts Functionalist ideals which state that her sense of smell originated thousands of years ago. As humanity’s ancestors with a sense of smell were superior in their given environment, they advanced their traits to future generations. Lizzie’s ancestors survived, “tweaking” humanity by utilizing adaptive qualities during natural selection. 4. Biopsychosocial Model a. The differing views that analyze a phenomena by examining different perspectives. The seven, main approaches range from biological and evolutionary examination to humanistic views.
