Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity Academic integrity is a must when it comes to presenting information while writing a paper or making a presentation to an individual or a group of peers because it ensures that the proper source is credited. By using someone else's work as your own, or by not citing your sources correctly, you are being academically dishonest and committing plagiarism. "Citing sources maintains the author's integrity, creates credibility for the author, shows the author is engaged in scholarship, and avoids plagiarism" (ASC Success Strategies: Plagiarism, n.d.). As growing professionals, our goal should be to uphold our academic integrity and maintain an outstanding reputation during our master's program. As nurses, it is essential to show that we are trustworthy and honest due to the way we are visualized by society as a whole. Nursing's backbone is not only skills and technology but also our beliefs and values as an individual, which can affect our judgment and decision making (Bahrieni, Azodi, Hajivandi, & Jahanpour, 2017). As an educated professional in the field of nursing, we are presented with many ethical dilemmas throughout our practice. Our judgment and decision-making abilities help us to make the most ethical decision for our patients and follow through in a professional manner. We are duty-bound as nurses to have a moral compass
that allows us to make decisions based on the highest level of integrity that we have obtained through our scholarly ethics and professional practices. PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work A few of the strategies I intend to pursue to help maintain my integrity through my academic profession are using SafeAssign and Grammarly along with APA guidelines to ensure proper credit is given to each source that I reference. I will also maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with my professors, preceptors, and fellow peers to maintain integrity and professional ethics during my educational endeavors and on into my career as a practitioner. In conclusion, Academic integrity is important as a professional and by giving credit where credit is due and by not committing dishonest acts within my writing. My strategy to uphold my academic integrity is to utilize the programs provided along with APA guidelines. Professional practices such as academic integrity and scholarly ethics are important as a nurse and an upcoming practitioner to instill trust in our patients and co-workers. By maintaining a professional demeanor with other professionals and making ethical decisions within my field of practice, I will be successful in my efforts.
