Values When reading a story one thing to keep in mind is are the values and morals of the story appropriate for the listeners. Make sure that the story does not have any cultural or gender stereotypes. That it does not have any ethnic labels or issues that you as the story teller do not want to have to discuss with the listeners later. This is very important in today's education system. We don't want to read or tell stories that puts tags on certain types of ethnic groups, cultures, or lifestyles. Sensory and Visual Images It is beneficial to choose a story that create sensory or visual images to the listener. This gives the listener an opportunity to visually see the story in their mind as it is being read. It gives them the feeling as if they are really there and can see, smell, and almost touch the story. Allowing this type of storytelling provides richness and depth to the story. It makes the story seem real to the listener. Examples of this step are: the fluffy, soft bunny rabbit, and the golden, sugary sweet smell of the apple pie. These examples add intensity to the objects in the story that make it feel as if the listener is actually experiencing it.
Memorable Characters Look for characters in a story that the listeners can relate to. Characters that are all different from each other in the story, they all have different character traits that easily identified by the listeners. There are series of books that have the same characters in them, but the story or plot is different. These are good to read for younger children because they recognize the characters and can focus on the problem or issue of the story. Storyteller Enthusiasm This is probably one of the most key steps in telling or reading stories. The storyteller must feel excited about reading the story. Do they even like the story? They should read the story using different voices and sounds that bring the characters to life.
