PATIENT TEACHING: •instruct patient to take medication as directed. •Advise patient that medication may cause menstrual-like cramps. •Caution patient to avoid smoking because nicotine constricts blood vessels. •Instruct patient to notify health care professional if infection develops as this may cause increased sensitivity to the medication. •Advise patients to notify health care professional of all Rx or OTC medications, vitamins, or herbal products being taken and to consult with health care professional before taking other medications. Oxytocin INDICATIONS: •induction of labor at term, •facilitation of threatened abortion, •postpartum control of bleeding after expulsion of the placentaACTION: •stimulates uterine smooth muscle, producing uttering contractions similar to those in spontaneous labor;•has vasopressor and antidiuretic effectsTHERAPEUTIC EFFECT(S): •induction of labor, •control of postpartum bleedingCONTRAINDICATIONS/PRECAUTIONS: •hypersensitivity, •anticipated nonvaginal delivery •USE CAUTIOUSLY IN: OB: first and second stages of labor; •slow infusion over 24 hours has caused water intoxication with seizure and coma or maternal death due to oxytocin’s antidiuretic effect.
