FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT: A functional layout is a workplace organization in which processes are organized by the type of work (function) rather than by value stream or in a cellular configuration where sequential process steps are located in close proximity. Each functional group sits together in a work area, and supports multiple product teams. RAILWAY STATION: INTRODUCTION: A railway station is an area where trains are a source of transportation for the people as well as for the freight. The first railway station was in Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened in 1830 with good facilities. The world’s largest railway station is situated in New York City in USA, which was built in 1903-13 and has 44 platforms. While Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh in India is the Asia’s longest railway platform, which is 4,483 ft. In Pakistan the first railway station was built in Lahore in 1861. Pakistan railway is an active member of International Union of Railways. TYPES OF RAILWAY STATIONS: Railway stations are divided into three types and they are Wayside Railway Station, Junction Railway Station and Terminal Railway Station. 1. WAYSIDE RAILWAY STATION: Wayside railway stations are the station that can move in two directions that is upside and downside. The wayside station is further divided into three: I. HALT STATION: Halt station is a small station, which consist of no staff and no building or any facility. In halt station train stops on the request of the passengers. LAYOUT OF HALT STATION 9

II. FLAG STATION: Flag station is a station in which the moments are controlled by showing the flag. The station consists of the staff and the building. LAYOUT OF FLAG STATION III. CROSSING STATION: Crossing station is the station in which the station is provided by the facility of crossing. It consist of two three lines with the loops so that if one line is occupied by the waiting train the other loop line can used for another train. 2. JUNCTION STATION: Junction railway station means where tracks of several destinations intersect. This refers to the physical connection between two lines coming from different routes. There are several arrangements in a junction such as: Rearrangement of traffic between main track and secondary track (branch), Cleaning and repairing of compartment and others facilities like good siding, engine shed etc. 3. TERMINAL STATION: A rail station where a railway line or its branches stop. There are several arrangements in a terminal station as well such as: Servicing the engine, Ticket office, Restaurants, Waiting room for passengers, Parking, Engine shed, Lock system room and Centralized traffic control system CLASSIFICATION OF STATION: Stations are differently classified on the basis of their operations BLOCK STATION: Manual display of block signal at a station. There are further three classes of block station.
