Federal building: a white separatist Randy Weaver was killed by the FBI for selling illegal sawed-off shotguns and a televised raid of a religious organization called the Branch Davidians for also selling illegal weapons. McVeigh's apocalyptic anger against his own government led him to construct a bomb which killed 149 adults and 19 children in Oklahoma City in 1995. To now dicuss one risk factor that contributed to McVeighs actions was due to his Situationl risk factor. My client could have also been affected by Schizophrenia with small symptoms of PTSD. My client was an honoray war veteran and separated after the Gulf War. McVeigh could not keep a steady job due to still transitioning from military to civilian lifestyle. Based on my
CASE STUDY REPORT 5 research I see that my client has a Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders. I’m leaning more towards the delusional state. This is due to the “believing something so strongly that no one is able to change their mind, but delusions are more than being stubborn” (DeLisi, Schwartz & Klien, 2013, Sect 2.4). Another mental disorder that was noticed within Timothy McVeigh was Post-Traumatic stress disorder also known as PTSD. PTSD happens when an individuals experience or witnesses a traumatized situation which causes intense psychological distress and changes the cognitive behavior of one’s mind (DeLisi, Schwartz & Klien, 2013, Sect 2.4). McVeigh was a Bronze Star recipient but while he was over there fighting the war he was confused on his leaderships outlook on the enemy compared to his own interaction. He was a casualty of war and misinformation, and believed he was doing the right thing for the American people. After McVeigh read The Turner Diaries (1978), his mindset change in the way he perceived things around him. “The Turner Diaries is not just a work of fiction; it is also political propaganda that encourages hate and racial violence. It pursues this goal primarily through two interrelated strategies of narrative persuasion. First, it invites empathic identification with hateful characters, potentially leading to emulative behavior in real life. Second, it creates a strong sense of racist group identity by excluding non-radical readers from emotionally engaging with the work”(Vananen, 2015, p. 172). So he began to become captivated in the Second Amendment to bear firearms. It is also mentioned that two events fueled him to commit his actions to the Federal building: a white separatist Randy Weaver was killed by the FBI for selling illegal sawed-off shotguns and a televised raid of a religious organization called the Branch Davidians for also selling illegal weapons. I belive through these events that McVeighs mental status changed. He seemed to have
CASE STUDY REPORT 6 the right reasoning but with being delusional cause him to think that the govenrmnet was trying to take away the Second Amendment.
