People who are smarter on average tend to have higher-paying jobs and better health care o Skills you have can also be useful for taking care of yourself If you’re smarter, you may have better calibration for knowing what symptoms to follow up w/ a doctor about & following doctor’s medication instructions o People whose brains are put together well have bodies w/ greater system integrity System integrity – even when you are stress, you are able to e resilient and persist Intelligence could be a reflection and sign of good neural health Neural connections in different regions of the brain are related to people’s scores on intelligence tests o They tend to change w/ intelligence scores as people get older Lothian birth-cohort study – area in Scotland is called Lothian that surrounds University of Edinburgh o Ian Deary found files with IQ test scores of people born in 1936 and tested in 1947 (age of 11) IQ test scores of every single 11-year old in Scotland who happened to go to school that day o Followed up w/ people from the tests and tested the ones within Edinburg regions Tested them psychological, gave them intelligence tests, and did brain imaging o Files helped w/ discoveries about stability of intelligence from childhood to old age & aging of intelligence in old age and how it related to brain structure o Neural connection s – pathways your brain uses to communicate w/ different parts of the brain, very fine Crystallized intelligence keeps improving in people until around age 65 or 70 o Cognitive resource that we keep building and acquiring into our old age Children get better w/ fluid intelligence w/ age until adolescence – hit their peak in late adolescent & early adulthood o They will start to slowly decline in fluid intelligence into old age starting from around age 20

Stimulants like Adderall do seem to boost cognitive performance while you’re on them o Your cognitive performances return back to same level after you stop taking time Hallucinogens and alcohol will decrease cognitive performance – you will probably perform poorly People who do a lot of drugs over many years do worse on intelligence tests o Real question is was the reason they were doing drugs because of vulnerability that might habe been indexed by lower intelligence OR did they originally have normal intelligence that was lowered w/ drug use Intelligence in Non-Human Animals Study on dog and wolves – they raise dogs and wolves in exactly the same environment o They teach them both to pull a piece of rope in order to get some food Afterwards, nothings happen when they pull on the rope o Wolves keeps pulling on the rope while dogs will only pull for a while then look at the human Dogs have intelligence response since they have interacted w/ humans and can help them Dogs can make connections – Chaser knew that the one name she hadn’t heard went w/ one toy she hadn’t seen o Dogs have been shown to remembers new connections made btwn new name and new toy Lecture 15 – Memory Psychology in the News
