Magistrate judges assist district judges in preparing cases for trial. They may also conduct trials in misdemeanor cases. There is at least one district court in each state, and the District of Columbia. Each district includes a U.S. bankruptcy court as a unit of the district court. 1) Describe the court system in your state. I live in the state of Pennsylvania and the court system in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is made up of The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, Superior Court, Commonwealth Court, Courts of Common Pleas, and Minor Courts. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is the highest court in the Commonwealth and the oldest appellate court in the nation. The Supreme Court’s administrative powers and jurisdictional responsibilities are vested with the seven-member court by the Pennsylvania State Constitution and a collection of statutes known as the Judicial Code.
