Changes to the grading scale will be posted on Blackboard. Other variables that impact your grades will be your general professionalism during class (attentiveness, effort, abuse of technology [such as telephones], preparation for conferences and contributions to your assigned groups during group activities. University is a time of transition to adulthood and professional behavior, and you will be held to professional standards in this class. Computers of any kind (including your own) are only to be used for class purposes. Early Drafts and Late Work : Although only the final draft of your five major papers will be graded, you will lose 5% of your final grade if you fail to produce an adequate draft for your conferences. The instructor will lower the grade of a final version that is submitted late. Work submitted more than one week after the deadline will generally not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Course Policies Attendance You are expected to attend all class sessions and your conferences and be available for this class five days a week. You will often be expected to help your classmates improve their work by providing them with feedback. If you do not attend classes you are depriving them of your input and shirking work. Any arrival 15 minutes after class begins will be considered an absence. Everyone receives four “excused” absences for the semester. You do not need to provide doctor’s notes. After four absences (either class

sessions or conferences) 30 points will be deducted from your overall score. More points ( 15 ) will be deducted for each absence thereafter. If you have an illness or situation that takes you away from class for an extended period of more than four classes the situation should be dealt with through the Dean of Students Office. This is a university (not a high school). You are responsible for anything that happens in class or any announcements, whether you are present or not. It is not the instructor’s responsibility to inform absent or non-attentive students of activities or deadlines that are on the schedule or have been announced in class. Class Participation You are expected to participate cooperatively, constructively, and to the best of your ability in all class activities. Academic Integrity/Plagiarism Policy When writers use material from other sources, they must acknowledge this source. Not doing so is called plagiarism, which means using without credit the ideas or expression of another. You are therefore cautioned (1) against using, word for word, without acknowledgement, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, etc. from the printed or manuscript material of others; (2) against using with only slight changes the
