Time went on and they waited for the property to sell, but the purchasers were slow coming. Weeks, then months went by without much success of selling. Then, about year into their marriage Zeena becomes ill. As time goes on Zeena’s illness doesn’t get any better, and at that point Ethan knew his dreams of becoming an engineer and leaving Starkfield were dead. Ethan had always known that Zeena was one not to live on a farm when they were first married. He often wondered that if her illness wasn’t some sort of resentment towards him for the property not selling, and for the broken promise of them leaving to move to into town. Either way, his pursuit of happiness wasn’t going to be reached.With Zeena now ill, Ethan needed help taking care of her. Zeena’s family seeing this sent her cousin Mattie Silver to them so that she could take care of the household chores. Mattie is a young vibrant woman who was down on her luck before Ethan and Zeena took her in. She was penniless and orphaned after her father’s business failed and both her parents passed. She was
forced to seek help from her relatives who happened to lose all their life saving when Mattie’s father’s business collapsed. To take revenge, her relatives sent her to work for Ethan and Zeena for free.Once Mattie shows up, Ethan’s life begins to change once again. Instead of hearing constant complaining from Zeena, he now hears the sweet uplifting voice of Mattie’s. Though Mattie is not very good at housework, she is nice to have around for good conversation, plus, shebrings an airiness to the Frome household instead of the dreary melancholy that it was. Ethan becomes infatuated with Mattie to the point where he begins to fantasize that she is his wife instead of Zeena. Ethan once again pursues his happiness in the form of Mattie.Because of Ethan’s fondness of Mattie, and her inefficiencies to maintain the household, Ethan began to help Mattie out around the home at the expense of letting the farm and the mill go. He would get up earlier than usual to help out just so that he would be able to spend time with her. He would even get up in the middle of the night to scrub the kitchen floor after everyone had gone to bed. He did all of this so that Zeena would stop being mean to Mattie and would not send her away. More than anything, however, was the fact that he began shaving every
