For the breath test the patient will eat or drink a substance that contains radioactive carbon. H. pylori breaks down the substance in your stomach. Later, the patient blows into a bag, which is then sealed. If the patient is infected with H. pylori, the breath sample will contain the radioactive carbon in the form of carbon dioxide. NOTE: inform doctor of any antacids taken before a breath test, because it could lead to a false negative. An endoscopy is a test that uses a scope, a hollow tube equiped with a lens, down your throat, into your esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. Using the scope the doctor looks for ulcers. If detected, the doctor will conduct a biopsy. A biopsy is the removal of small tissue samples for examination in a lab. A biopsy will also identify the presence of H. pylori in the patients’ stomach lining. HOW IS IT TREATED? Treatment usually includes medication to decrease stomach acid production. Treatment depends on cause. Antibiotics may be needed if a bacteria (commonly H.pylori) is determined to be the cause.
