Describe the major concepts of the theory. How are they defined? (Theoretically and/or operationally) Is the author consistent in the use of the concepts and other terms in the theory? According to Watson, the major elements of her theory are (a) the carative factors, (b) the transpersonal caring relationship, and (c) the caring occasion/caring moment. Watson views the “carative factors” as a guide for the core of nursing. She uses the term carative to contrast with conventional medicine’s curative factors. Her carative factors attempt to “honor the human dimensions of nursing’s work and the inner life world and subjective experiences of the people we serve” (Cara, 2003). Watson’s concept incorporates philosophical acknowledgement into holistic care and mystical aspects of nursing. She factor in the emotional, spiritual, body, mind nurturing as a whole. Watson's Theory of Human Caring provides a philosophical and theoretical foundation for nursing science, practice, and education. Human caring is in fact a worldview that encompasses a way of being awake to oneself and others, being intentional in one's life and work, being genuinely present for self and other, and embracing the caring–healing transformational process (Kim, 2006). Interpret how the concepts are defined. Implicitly or explicitly? Watson’s theory defines nursing as a distinct health profession. It makes explicit nursing’s values, knowledge, and practice. The caring science that created by Watson was expanded by the philosophical and transpersonal as the core for the framework. This creates a more explicit context based on the broader context of ethics. Watson links her “human care process” concepts
LIVING LEGEND THEORIST: JEAN WATSON 6 by the relational proposition that states “transpersonal caring is the full actualization of the carative factors in a human-to-human transaction” (Sourial, 1996). She also argues that if an inter-subjective flow between two people can be established, “the recipient is better able to have a release of some of the disharmony of the mind, body, and soul. Therefore, they can be freer to direct pent up energy to his or her own healing process” (Sourial, 1996). Examine the relationships (propositions) among the major concepts. Although influenced by the work of others, Watson based much of her work off of her own ideas, values, and beliefs about life, health, and healing (Jesse, 2010, p. 94). Theory gives practicing nurses a professional identity. Nursing research is the inquiry that nursing theory based on. With the rapid changes in the healthcare world, nurses are needed to maintain their skills and education to abide with the new technologies and researches. We have to make sure that the intensity of care or specialized services are matching up with the practice delivery models. Each result of nursing research adds tested facts to nursing theory that can be learned by nursing students and practitioner. The knowledge base of management science includes theory, which in turn includes concepts, methods, and principles.
