environment and making sure it is a good temperature while also keeping the bearing
itself clean.
7. Some factors that affect what kind of bearing is chosen are what actions need to be
performed, the speed at which the bearing will be operating at and the temperature and
environment the bearing will be exposed to.
8. The different modes of lubrication for plain bearings are:
a. Boundary
b. Mixed-film
c. Full-film

d. Hydrostatic
9. Ball bearings are able to operate at higher speeds with less fatigue damage because the
load it carries is distributed across how ever many balls are in the bearing. With a small
point of contact on each of those balls, the bearing has a longer expected life than that
of a roller bearing.
10. Thrust ball bearings differ from radial ball bearings in the way the rolling elements are
supported. Radial bearings have rolling elements sandwiched between 2 rings while
thrust ball bearings have that similar structure but with guides that block the balls from
moving when an axial load is applied.
Summary Conclusion:
In conclusion, this lab allowed us to get a better understanding of bearings and how they
relate the industry in regards to their importance. We also got another chance to work in a team
environment and figure out how to delegate research and break up responsibilities in order to
conquer a task. After completing this lab even through the winter storm that Texas experienced,
I feel more confident in my understanding of bearings and how they relate to the total operating
system that can be applied to almost any field of work.
