Protecting Power 0:00-0:26 Protecting Power - In this lesson we're going to talk about protecting power. A critical part of protecting your PC is managing the electrical power that's supplied to the system. You need to understand the different problems that can come from power issues, because they will happen to you. It's not a matter of if it will happen. It's a matter of when. So, let's look at a variety of problemsthat can occur with power, and what you can do to prevent those problems and protect your systems. Power Surge 0:27-0:33 The first problem is a power surge. A power surge happens when you get an increase in voltage that can last for seconds. Power Spike 0:34-0:51 A power spike is like a power surge, but it lasts milliseconds instead of seconds. In either case, instead of getting 110 or 120 volts from a wall outlet, you'll get an increase of an unknown amount of volts coming down the line. It doesn't happen very often, but it can, especially if there's a lightning storm. Power Sag 0:52-1:03 A power sag is a decrease in voltage. Everything may be going fine, and you could be getting 110 to 115 volts from the wall socket, when the voltage suddenly drops down to 80 or 60 volts. Brownout 1:04-1:19 Unlike a sag, a brownout happens when there's a decrease in voltage that lasts for seconds. The power doesn't go out completely, but the lights will dim. Brownouts occur when there's too muchdemand on the electrical grid, and there isn't enough power to supply everybody that wants to use it. Blackout 1:20-1:51 The last problem is a blackout. A blackout is a complete loss of power. Blackouts can occur when a short has happened, a tree or high winds have knocked down a power line, a transformer has blown out or for any other unknown reason. Now, all of these power issues can be real problems for your PCs. Because if you lose power, your whole system goes down. And if that happens you risk losing valuable data. For most organizations, their most valuable asset isn't necessarily their buildings or their parking lots, it's the data that they create and store. You need to protect that data at all costs. Surge Protectors 1:52-2:22 Most people plug their PC systems into a surge protector or power strip, which is good. Power strips provide multiple power outlets from a single plug in, but is not necessarily a surge protector. Surge protectors are designed to capture and filter out power surges that come down the line. By either conditioning the power, or by having a circuit breaker that trips off if the power shuts off.These are good, but they only protect you against surges. Surge protectors don't protect you againstpower sags, brownouts or blackouts. UPS 2:23-3:29 To protect your critical systems, you need to use an uninterruptible power supply or UPS.
