Ezra Jack Keats Book Award New Writer Honor (2015) Age(s): 5-8 Copeland, M. Firebird . Myers, C. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers, 2014. Print. 40pp. Brief overview of book content: The famous ballerina Misty Copeland shares with an aspiring dancer what it takes to overcome and work towards where she is in her career. It is hard as a young girl to have the confidence you need to get through life, but sometimes when you get encouragement from the right people, it can really push an individual to stay strong and go the extra mile, and that is exactly what Misty Copeland’s words did for the little girl of the story. By the end of the story you could tell the young girls character had grown in confidence about herself and her dancing abilities. Opinion of the book I enjoyed the similes throughout the book. This is something girls and boys can relate to, we all get insecure at times, but it is with

encouragement of our friends and family that we are able to overcome. This is a great story about rising to the occasion and persevering. Notes on illustration The use of line throughout this book was used well and it guides the eye well to the most important parts of the illustrations. The lighting and shading of each illustration helped bring in the dramatic feelings and the intensity of some parts of the book.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
