Nurse Leader Interview Summary-Characteristics of the Organization The mission of the organization is “to support the wellness and safety of individuals and their communities throughout the Commonwealth” (Central State, n.d.). The vision is the continuous pursuit of excellence through the value of H.O.P.E. (health & wellness, openness & respect, personal & organizational integrity and empowerment & recovery). This information can be found on the hospitals intra and internet websites. It is also taught extensively in orientation classes and posted thorough out the units of the hospital wards. Strengths : New Chief Nursing Officer that is trying to implement change from a top down approach to focus on increased patient care, increased staff and patient safety and decreased staff turnover rates. Because of the new change structure, some staff have left that were complacent with the old structure but many have stayed and new staff have come aboard, being trained under the new structure. Although this is a work in process, it is considered a strength because leadership has identified certain short comings within the facility and has been implementing changes to improve the current processes. She has also identified staff members who are giving subpar care, provided additional coaching and guidance and in some cases relived staff of their position if improvements were not seen.

Weaknesses : This facility has a high staff turnover rate mostly related to safety issues. Because of the decreased staffing numbers, staff are having mandated overtime frequently causing increased stress and call outs, decreased job satisfaction and increases in the prevalence of safety related issues. Due to the stigma of working in a psychiatric forensic facility where there is a high risk for physical injury, hiring new employees, especially nurses, is an ongoing struggle. This provides for a major opportunity for improvement within the facility to increase safety, increase staffing and staff turnover. As a facility, they do not encourage bedside/patient side reporting. Handoff is written for the oncoming staff and left in the break area. This causes a lot of confusion among the oncoming staff because it leaves questions unanswered and patient needs not communicated to the oncoming staff. Since the patient satisfaction is decreased because they feel the staff does not care and the staff morale is low because they feel they are not being effectively prepared for their shift. Because this is a psychiatric facility, not only does the patient satisfaction decrease, patient safety is also decreased due to the elevated behaviors exhibited by the angry patients.
