Upton Sinclair wrote a book which revealed how unsanitary methods used by the food industry led to a scandal in which the quality and purity of food sold to the U.S. public. The book exposed Chicago's meatpacking industry giving the public information on the diseased meat, dead rats and poison being incorporated into the sausages being sold for human consumption. Pure Food and Drug Act: A Muckraking Triumph. (n.d.) President Theodore Roosevelt implemented the Pure Food and Drug Act, as well as the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 based on the claims of the Sinclairs book. Upton Sinclair was reviled by the industry owners during the Progressive Era. President Roosevelt sent social worker James Bronson Reynolds and labor commissioner Charles P. Neill to investigate the Upton Sinclair's claims and make surprise visits to meat packing facilities. This act prohibited contaminated foods from being transported and or sold. It was the first federal law to regulate food and drugs based on these claims. This act controlled the public from contaminated unsafe foods as well as drugs. This protected people from being deceived by mislabeled, amplified claims if cures and how well drugs work. The man responsible for drafting the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was Dr. H.W. The progressive social movements are divided into two, one being movements for equality and the other the movement for individual rights, and economic justice the movement for equality was based on the injustice and inequality that the people of America were dealing with. Women, blacks, and immigrants and others were leading movements for civil rights, better working conditions and raise increase. (Norton, 2015) The next of the social movements worked to keep the current progressive politics and traditions working. The did have some values in common as far as morals and philosophy when it came to American traditions and the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Along with a few from both major political parties and religions such as Protestant, Catholic, and Judaism. Each of the movements does their part to advance the values such as working together for a common good, human and social equality, and democracy. The connection between the social movements and progressivism is the shared the goal of pursuing common values and implementing them.
