consequence, the breakdown of the relations of subordination has led, in a relatively short time, to almost generalized insurbordination, to the postrevolutionary destructured soci- ety. (4) This one-sided form of denial present in the social realm is also felt in the economic realm. The revolution demolished the regulator of the command economy but not the apparatus of production and management peculiar to this economy. The immediate result was that the economy has begun to drift wildly. Simultaneously provoking the disintegration of social rela- tionships, the deregulation of social existence, the destructur- ing of society, and the progressive paralysis of the production apparatus, the shock of the revolution threatens to negate much more than a particular social order—it threatens to take over the underpinnings of social conviviality. The state of deregulation, of disintegration, of destructurization, and of social paralysis can only be stabilized with great difficulty, because (among other reasons) by their nature, all of these dysfunctions are not static but dynamic, and their continuation beyond a certain point may transform the negation of Stalinist society into the negation of sociality, the minimal order intrinsic to the existence of a community. Because of this risk, the revolution implicitly produced not only the possibility but also the necessity of transition. THE REVOLUTION 927 achievements of the revolutionary act while at the same time transcending its limits. Thus, between the anti-Stalinist revolution and the transition toward post-Stalinism there exists a relation of continuity/discontinuity, the latter coming into being as the corrective prolongation of the former. Transition and Revolution The nature of the anti-Stalinist revolution is conditioned by the nature of the Stalinist social order. The nature of the transition toward post-Stalinism is conditioned in a direct way by the nature of the anti-Stalinist revolution. The operational reference of the transition in its passing phases is not the possibility of an alternative social system which may be fulfilled, but the residual reality of the Stalinist system which may be overcome. The improbability of a resurrection of Stalinism—which is nothing less than the probability of accomplishing the transition—results from the ultimate causes of its downfall. These causes did not come into being during the evolution of the Stalinist order but rather were written into its genetic code. Reduced to their essence, they amount to the attempt to assimilate industrial technology, which is insepara- ble from the appearance of a free producer, and to enslave its producers and, ultimately, the entire society.
