Publix hosts a math night for our students in which the students and families are able to come in and participate in various stations set up around the store to promote math problem solving skills. An action I can take is to find more businesses like Publix willing to participate in events for our students. These events can be family nights or providing guest speakers to come and talk to the students about their business and how it can help them as learners. Mutch and Collins (2012) states that engagement works best when teachers, families, and communities collaborate together to produce meaningful events for the students (p.175). SMART GoalsMy SMART goal to implement culturally responsive teaching practices in my classroom is to create a respectful classroom environment in which students work collaboratively in groups and assist each other in finding answers and completing assignments. I will provide opportunities forthem to work with different groups and set consequences for poor choices and rewards for teamwork. My SMART goal that will help gain a better understanding of families so that I can connect instruction to students’ experiences is: I will meet with families on a quarterly basis to explain the math learning standards, share data on their child’s math performance and provide them with written documents in their home language explaining how they can help at home. In collaboration with community members outside of the school environment as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer academy school my goal will be to work collaboratively with the Bucs each year to provide more opportunities of school involvement and enriching the lives of our students throughevents and activities. In respect to a community goal involving the school and families I will join the parent-teacher comity and help set up events and activities that support our learning community and find ways to engage family involvement in the classroom. My SMART goal will
9be by the end of the school year to participate in focused activities to increase positive relationships with student families and members of the community. I will use technology to communicate effectively with my parents on a daily basis by sending email reminders for upcoming events, providing access to homework links and support, and checking emails and responding within twenty-four hours to parent questions and concerns. Action PlanMy first action plan is for meeting with families on a quarterly basis to explain the math learning standards, share data on their child’s math performance and provide them with written documents in their home language explaining how they can help at home. At the end of each quarter I will create a sign-up genius to send to parents to select a date and time for a conference regarding their child’s math performance. The conference will focus solely on the child’s math performance and ways the parent can work at home to help improve their abilities. In meeting
